Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to commonly asked questions about Milestone, Pathway, and planning for your settlement payment.
Who is Milestone?
Milestone is a financial firm that assists plaintiffs like you as they prepare to receive their payment.
Is Milestone part of my attorney’s law firm?
No, Milestone is a company that is independent from your law firm. The attorneys and law firms that have assisted you in pursuing your claim do not provide advice or assistance with regard to structured settlements, government benefits matters, or other financial or tax issues. The attorneys and law firms that have assisted you in pursuing your claim have not received any fee from Milestone.
What is Pathway?
Pathway is a digital platform created by Milestone that helps ensure your funds arrive faster, that a variety of secure payment method options are available, and that you’ve had an opportunity to decide if payment planning is right for you.
Will I be receiving a 1099 to pay taxes on my settlement?
Milestone does not issue 1099 forms to individuals participating in standard personal injury settlements. Milestone is not a tax advisor; please contact your personal tax advisor with any additional tax questions.
How I can access my individual closing statement?
You received an email or text message with a secure, unique link to your own closing statement. By clicking this link, you will be directed to a webpage where you can view and sign your statement in order to receive your payment.
I’m having trouble using the link to my closing statement document on Pathway. Can I access it in a different way?
Yes. You can visit upmcpathway.com/step-1 and click the Review & Sign button under Step 1. From there, you can use the claimant ID provided in the email or text message you received to access your individual closing statement.
What happens if I select a payment method and then change my mind about receiving settlement planning?
Once you choose a payment method on Pathway, you will no longer be able to plan financially for your settlement payment before it arrives. However, you can work with a financial advisor at any time; however, you do risk losing eligibility for any applicable government benefits should the funds cause you to cross the income thresholds.
Can I change my payment method?
With many of the payment methods available on Pathway, the processing time is often too fast to successfully stop payment once it has been submitted. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that we would be able to change your payment method once you’ve submitted your selection.
